Band

The 744 Cowichan Squadron band serves to provide musical accompaniment to the Squadron’s Parade. The band also performs in the community, in parades, and Remembrance Day services. There is no requirement for cadets to already be musicians to join the band, our instructor will teach musical skills, and marching band drill. While it is recommended that band members rent or own their instruments, instruments can be borrowed from DND at no cost if required. Those interested in participating in the Squadron Band are requested to speak to the Commanding Officer.

Drill Team

The 744 Cowichan Squadron Drill Team practices the finer points of the 201 Drill Manual. Drill Team members work on their personal drill, and team drill, and ultimately prepare for the regional drill competition.

Ground School

Ground School is an optional program for level 2 and above cadets who are interested in pursuing the Glider Pilot Scholarship (GPS) and/or Power Pilot Scholarship (PPS) Courses. The program covers all the Theory of Flight in an in depth manner to prepare cadets for the GPS/PPS entrance exams. Interested cadets are encouraged to purchase a copy of From the Ground Up, the standard aviation studies textbook, which are sold by the Sqn.

Range Team

The range team is an optional activity for cadets who wish to become more involved in Air Rifle Marksmanship. Members must have completed the Level One Rifle/Range safety test before they can be allowed to participate. Depending on number of participants, cadets may have the opportunity to compete in the Regional Marksmanship competition, and the DCRA Mail-In Competition.

First Aid Team

The First Aid team practices the elements of Emergency and Standard First aid, in realistic scenarios. Cadets are able to achieve their St John’s Ambulance First Aid qualification, and compete in the regional Cadet First Aid Competitions.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Award is a self-directed programme in which participants set and achieve personal goals for community service, skills, fitness, and adventure. It is a great way to explore new interests and try new challenges you might not have done otherwise, and even stretch your ‘comfort zone’. The Award is open to all young Canadians age 14 yrs to 24 yrs old, and has 3 levels:

  • Bronze (for ages 14 yrs and up)
  • Silver (for ages 15 yrs and up)
  • Gold (for ages 16 yrs and up)
